Des spécimens adultes du Copépode commensal Balaenophilus unisetus, trouvés récemment en grand nombre sur les fanons de baleines, particulièrement sur un rorqual (Balaenoptera borealis), d'Afrique du Sud, paraissent identiques à ceux précédemment décrits d'Australie occidentale et de l'Atlantique nord. Les stades nauplius montrent quelques petites différences par rapport aux précédentes descriptions. Des adultes en reproduction (femelles ovigères) sont signalés pour la première fois de l'hémisphère sud. Les captures signalées suggèrent que, dans cet hemisphère, Balaenophilus peut préférer comme hôte les baleines à fanons qui recherchent les eaux plus chaudes comme habitat.
