The mandible and the first and second maxilla of Hippolyte inermis are described for the first three zoeal stages. Evolution of these appendages during the larval development has been observed. Structural changes occurring at each moult are gradual without abrupt changes; they lead to: (1) the best adaptation to a rough and hard food by the improvement of cutting and crushing parts; and (2) the formation of a pre-oral chamber serving for a longer trituration of the food before its ingestion.
