Lithoglyptes spinatus Tomlinson & Newman, 1960, a d'abord été décrit de la région caraïbe. Sa découverte ultérieure dans des localités indo-pacifiques largement séparées a conduit à reprendre la question de sa synonymie possible avec L. ampulla Aurivillius, 1892, auquel, il avait été comparé à l'origine. Il a été conclu que les deux espèces étaient synonymes, et, par ailleurs qu'elles étaient aussi synonymes de L. bicornis Aurivillius, 1892, les caractères morphologiques utilisés pour distinguer cette dernière relevant d'un polymorphisme ontogénétique. Les modes possibles de dispersion de ces organismes dont les larves ne s'alimentent pas et sont de médiocres nageuses, sont trop hypothétiques pour expliquer la biogéographie de l'espèce.
