Both urine of attractive females and ecdysterone may act as a sexual pheromone in Gammarus. Depositing either of these substances on a non-attractive female may induce precopulation with a male which belongs to the same species. No difference was found in the biochemical composition of the urine of males, attractive females and non-attractive females. On the other hand a difference in pH exists between the urine of the males and that of the females.
