Un nouveau genre Orthopontonia est décrit pour la crevette pontoniine Periclimenaeus ornatus Bruce, 1970, associée à des éponges dans les eaux est-africaines et australiennes. La position systématique du nouveau genre est discutée de façon détaillée et des illustrations sont données. Les spécimens récemment collectés à Heron Island, Queensland, ont tous été trouvés en association avec l'éponge Jaspis stellifera (Carter). Le nouveau genre se distingue de toutes les autres espèces de crevettes pontoniinés par l'armature unique des doigts de la pince du plus petit des seconds péréiopodes, lesquels sont pourvus de nombreux petits tubercules côtelés.
