The history of the various concepts of the status of Niphargus rhenorhodanensis Schellenberg is discussed. The species, which is known from Germany and France, was first briefly described by Schellenberg in 1937 as a subspecies of Niphargus longicaudatus Costa, 1856. A morphological redescription of the species is now provided, based on type material.
