La présence dans la Méditerranée d'espèces de crabes éventuellement différenciées avant la désiccation messinienne est discutée par rapport au modèle biogéographique causal proposé par Almaça (1985a) pour la faune actuelle de Brachyoures méditerranéens. Des changements chorologiques dans la Méditerranée occidentale et l'Atlantique adjacent sont analysés. L'importance de l'influence méditerranéenne sur l'Atlantique adjacent est relevée.
