The mathematical problem of a cylindrical dust deposit subjected to a time sinusoidal variation of the ambient temperature is investigated, where the cylinder is symmetrically heated by exothermic zero-order chemical reaction. By approximating the heat-generation term, the dimensionless heat balance equation is solved analytically to give an approximate solution for the center-line temperature of the cylinder, using Laplace transforms. Consideration is given, based on the analysis, to the possibility of self-ignition in comparison to stepwise change of ambient temperature.
