Extremely fine (submicronic) regular (spherical) nickel powders were synthesized in an autoclave upon 'hypocritical', critical and hypercritical conditions, starting from rosin nickel salts as precursors. The nature of the solvent used to suspend the rosin salt appears to be of primary importance; 2-Butanol gave better results than acetone. The (T,P) parameters are not believed to be essential since adequate microstructures were obtained below the critical parameters of 2-butanol. Consequently, the special properties associated with supercritical fluids are not thought to play an important role herein. In comparison, the thermal degradation of the rosin precursor under atmospheric conditions displays some significant drawbacks, such as a higher processing temperature, a less satisfactory microstructure and a heterogeneous macroscopic aspect of the powder.
