Histamine has been implicated in the control of cell growth of diverse tissues and cell lines. The effect of histamine is mediated by the interaction with its specific receptors, which belong to the family of seven transmembrane G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). However, the mechanism(s) involved and the factors that regulate this process have not yet been determined. In this article the relevance of the control of H2 receptor density at the cell surface and its implications on the regulation of histamine action are discussed. The existence of regulatory mechanisms for the expression of H2 receptor could be important for the histamine-mediated regulation of cell growth observed in many cell lines, tumours and tissues.
