The reactions of the OH adducts of cytosine and its derivatives with nitroxides namely TEMPO and TEMPOL have been followed by steady state γ-radiolysis and pulse radiolysis. Pulse radiolysis studies show that the transient OH adducts of cytosine and its derivatives react with TEMPO and TEMPOL by electron transfer reaction and not by adduct formation as was observed in the case of thymine. The second order rate constants for these electron transfer reactions are of the order of 107 - 108 dm3 mol-1 s-1.
