The photochemical behavior of four phenyl- and cyano-substituted dienes was examined in EPA glass at liquid nitrogen temperature. The results are discussed along with the published results on photochemistry of alkylated dienes in argon matrix and calculated properties of the conformers. Conditions for formation of the unstable s-cis conformers were identified. Structural limitations that affect the Hula-twist process of isomerization are also described.
