This discussion is a reformulation of ideology-critique from the point of view of Marx’s theory of the value form. This rethinking of ideology – a formulation I call a value theory of ideology – is carried out through a reading of Marx’s analysis of the capitalist perceptual economy articulated most systematically in Volume IIIof Capital. In the course of this ‘rethinking’ I also revisit several concepts that have become associated with Marxian ideology-critique and which are often presented as grounds for the latter’s dismissal: inverted appearance, false consciousness, economism, and the base-superstructure metaphor.
