Many of the problems faced by Muslim women in the twentieth century were not due to the traditions or peculiarities of Islam. Rather, modern-state building and the new issues that presented themselves in such a process, led to a patriarchal structure supported by the state and its laws. The power given to the father/husband by modern laws included physical custody over the "person" and property of wife and children.
