image of Ancient Civilizations from Scythia to Siberia

Excavations conducted between 1984 and 1989 by Soviet-Yemeni team at the site of RaybŪn I have revealed a complex of 4 monumental stone buildings erected on stone socles, passages between them, and various annexes constructed of mud-bricks. The complex is presumed to have been dedicated to the fertitility goddess, Dhat-Himyam. Building 4, the largest, survives as a stone socle, but was clearly the central temple of the complex being comparable in its layout to other well-known South Arabian temples, with a central colonnaded hall, porticoes and stair-cases. Building 7, although smaller, has the same general layout and may have been a refectory. Building 2 resembles Southern Arabian dwelling-houses in its layout. Building 3, the second largest, does not follow the groundplan typical of Hadramaut temples, but inscriptions and the remains of an altar show that it was a temple. Numerous finds of facing tiles show that the buildings were richly decorated. A vast collection of pottery allows the dating of the active life of the complex, at least three stages of its reconstruction, and its final destruction by fire to the period 6th-5th c. B.C.-1st c. A.D.
