Abstract This paper examines Faḫr al-Dīn al-Rāzī’s methodology in kalām and tafsīr by investigating al-Rāzī’s method of taʾwīl. It situates al-Rāzī’s methodology with respect to the Muʿtazila and falsafa, two trends that greatly influenced al-Rāzī. It proposes that al-Rāzī, who is generally considered the leading Sunnī theologian and exegete after the death of al-Ġazālī, adopted methods and ideas from the Muʿtazila and that he effectively synthesized these with Avicennian philosophy to forge an orginal methodology.
