Teachers matter, especially in religiously affiliated schools, by various reasons. Therefore, development of teaching competencies is important. But it is not enough. Teachers should become change agents. School development can be used as ressource for raising and training such competencies, so far as schools constitute a "safe space". Against the background of some experiences with school development processes in Protestant schools in Germany it is argued that school development is a helpful strategy of teacher inservice-training for change agents and for improvement of religiously affiliated schools.
