A retrospect on the article-writer’s career in translating Arabic fiction into English, this study makes use of the triad often adopted in translation theory—source text and culture, intertext, and target-text and culture—in order to investigate some of the issues connected with the complex process of transferring the fictional creativity of Arab novelists to the target environment of anglophone readers and the publishing outlets that provide those readers with examples of that creativity. Subjects discussed include the processes whereby the source-texts are chosen, the various stages in the transfer process itself, and the many issues connected with the publication of translations and their reception in the target culture. Specific examples of authors and works are presented as illustrations of the processes (and issues) involved at each stage of the translation sequence.
