There can be few bodies of source material so comprehensively catalogued and yet so scarcely studied as the printed image. The works reviewed here mark important steps forward in the study of images in early modern England, since they treat “image” not as discrete but as integral to historical study before 1700. Each is committed to situating images amidst a web of printed and manuscript sources, and demonstrates their contribution to wider historiography about politics, religion, society, and culture if they are used in this interdisciplinary and integrated manner. Surveying their findings, this review article suggests future areas of research in a field which must surely blossom, pointing to ways in which we might achieve a fuller picture of the place of the pictorial.
