This paper is an experiment in applying Edward Said's notion of "human experience" to visual materials. Caan we avoid the polarizing structure of Orientalisrn by accessing "experience" and do visual images lend themselves to such an approach? Illustrated travel books from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century arc the basis of this study.
