Because of the increasing sense of helplessness experienced by pastoral workers, a poll on religious practices was conducted among Montreal Francophone Catholics. A twofold relationship emerges from the data: on the one hand, conformity to the institution stands side by side with a selective distancing from it; on the other, the intransigent mentality is opposed to compromise with the surrounding culture. Overall, selectivity blends with conformity. This attitude exists in a tradition that has not been modified by the pastoral orientation of the Council. Indeed, this orientation may have reinforced it. The conclusion poses the challenge of historical continuity, the fruitfulness of faith and Christian action.
