The basic elements of temptation, an important theme in spiritual anthropology, are investieated in the light of the hiblical traditions Semantic research en the Hebrew roots for searching (hqr), trying (bhn), being tempted (pth), being put to the test (nsh) and being smelted (tsrf), shows the basic structure of temptation: one is searched to the depths of one's being and one is tried with regard to one's destiny. Both poles together structure the spiritual way. The possibilities of the traveller are explored by tempting, trying and smelting him.
