This article describes the current status of non-discrimination and equality in the law, the relevant policy and the struggles which civil society faces and argues for a stronger prioritising of equality by actors in the human rights movement. It offers comments on the main trends in interpreting the concept of discrimination and on the principles of future work on non-discrimination.

It also reflects on the implications of the rather broad consensus in Europe that what is needed is an integrated approach to the right to equality. It asserts that the future of the European policy against discrimination depends in part on the pace of the sustainable progress of non-discrimination and equality outside Europe.
