Opus desperatum adimpletum, The completion of the translation into Dutch of the Corpus iuris civilis. – The Justinianic Code and the Novellae have been translated into Dutch for the first time, which is at the same time a first for a modern translation in any language since several generations. The three volumes containing the Code present the original text and the translation in parallel columns, with references to the medieval authenticae which have been included at the end of each volume. The three volumes with the Novels are based on the Collection of 168 Novels as the source text to be translated, and thus selected the Byzantine rather than the Western civilian tradition. This paper discusses text and translation of the six volumes in question, as well as the completion of a full translation of the Corpus iuris civilis.
