’ Paraphrasis of the Institutes. – In none of the many manuscripts of Theophilos’ Paraphrasis the first title is transmitted. This is commonly – and also in the recent Groningen edition – explained by an early ‘mechanical’ loss. The author suggests another solution to the problem: the first title was omitted intentionally when Theophilos’ Paraphrasis of the Institutes replaced Photios’ Eisagoge because it contained too strong similarities to the latter’s first title and inappropriate allusions to legal teaching. This intentional omission is dated to the years 886–888 and attributed to the emperor Leon VI himself.
