The cause of this rather bibliographical issue of Exchange on theological and missionary themes in Japan has been nothing less than sheer curiosity. We had for a long time noticed -not without admiration- the steady productivity displayed in the issues of The Japan Missionary Bulletin.(JMB). What roused our interest most was the fact that this R.- Catholic Bulletin is published partly in English and partly in Japanese. The question that came to our mind was: will the articles in Japanese differ in content and orientation from the English ones? The answer could only be given by at least translating the titles of the contributions in Japanese and by somehow locating their authors. Once we had done so - with the help of the persons mentioned in the Preface - so much time and energy had gone into this enterprise that we decided to publish the results.Because of the ecumenical composition and interest of our Institute, it was almost a matter of course to include a Protestant counterpart: The Japan Christian Quarterly (JCQ), a journal sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Missionaries in Japan. It then was natural to also attempt a comparison between these journals.
