Although Hebrews uniquely casts the Spirit as one who speaks the words of Scripture, the conception of pneuma elsewhere in the letter has generally been regarded as anthropological or angelic, rather than overtly Trinitarian. Consequently, discussion of Hebrews' treatment of divine figures tends to concentrate upon the respective roles of God and Christ, with the Spirit invariably set to one side. This article seeks to redress the balance and focuses upon the role of the divine Spirit in Hebrews, looking in turn at the various references to pneuma to tease out the contours of the letter's portrayal. It suggests that the Spirit has a key role to the play in the epistle, with the Pentecostal gift of the Spirit the defining evidence for the reception and efficacy of the new covenant.
