Abstract:
The Brazilian presidential election of October 2006 was easily won by the incumbent President Lula. At the same time, the Workers Party (of which Lula is the historical head) saw a drop in the number of votes won at the legislative elections, for the first time in its history. Added to this was a clear change in the spatial and social distribution of the Lula vote. Why did Lula win so many votes on the national level whilst recording a drop among the social groups and in the regions that had contributed so heavily to his victory in 2002?
To explain this, the article takes the political offering as its starting point and shows that it was greatly conditioned by the electoral rules and the low level of education and politicisation in a large proportion of the population. It goes on to analyse the nature of the representations and opinions that Brazilians (starting with the working class, the main component of the electorate) had with regard to Lula and to the action of his government; it emphasises the strong correlation between the Lula vote and poverty indicators, and demonstrates that the massive vote for Lula among this working-class population - to which he owes his victory - is above all a vote of gratitude.
