<title> SUMMARY </title>Jagadis Chunder Bose (1858-1937) was the first Indian physicist to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. He made his name in the scientific community by constructing an instrument to produce electromagnetic waves of short wavelength. Later he worked on plant physiology. For demonstration as well as research purposes he constructed many instruments. These are discussed, together with accounts of their reception in England and Germany, and comments on the provision of instruments in India.
