La cultura scientifica a Roma negli anni seguenti il 1870, quando la citt pass dallo Stato Pontificio al Regno d'Italia e quindi cercava una sua identit, un elemento poco noto ma si rivela uno strumento interpretativo estremamente utile per comprendere le scelte di programmazione economica e di politica culturale di quegli anni che sono all'origine dell'odierna situazione della museologia scientifica romana. La creazione del Museo Astronomico e Copernicano risale a questo periodo, essendo stata proposta nel 1873, durante le celebrazioni del quarto centenario della nascita di Nicola Copernico, ampliando l'idea iniziale di un Museo che accogliesse documenti e cimeli riguardanti la permanenza del grande astronomo polacco in Italia.
