La pubblicazione della manoscritta Risposta allegorico-romanzesca a J. J. Ferber evidenzia un aspetto inedito quanto cruciale del pensiero geologico di Giovanni Arduino. Il concetto di epoca applicato alla storia dei mutamenti subiti dalla crosta terrestre viene infatti qui postulato in anticipo sulle Epoques de la Nature di Buffon. Le riflessioni arduiniane aprono inoltre una terza via moderata tra l'ipotesi catastrofista e quella uniformista, superando nel contempo la rigida antitesi tra nettunismo e plutonismo che costituir l'elemento condizionante degli studi di scienze della terra tra fine Settecento ed inizio Ottocento.
