L'Origine delleSpecie, che Charles Darwin pubblic nel 1859, sovente considerata come l'opera che segn un punto di svolta nel conflitto tra sapere scientifico e religione. Recenti studi, specialmente sul ruolo giocato nella vicenda da T. H. Huxley, il bulldog di Darwin, sottolineano invece (o meglio, al pari) l'intenzione di Huxley di escludere soprattutto appassionati e dilettanti da un ambito di ricerca che si stava trasformando in un settore per esperti. Per quanto le riviste del periodo contenessero soltanto un 10% di articoli scientifici, la domanda nei confronti di informazioni non specialistiche era in diminuzione; scienza e discipline umanistiche si stavano difatti trasformando in ci che C. P. Snow avrebbe poi definito le due culture.
