Scopo principale di questo saggio e quello di mettere a fuoco il significato politico e culturale che il progressivo costituirsi della Collezione Galileiana venne assumendo nella battaglia a favore della riabilitazione di Galileo come scienziato e filosofo copernicano. All'indomani della morte il progetto di costituzione e di arricchimento della Collezione Galileiana si venne subito a fondere in un unico grande progetto di riscatto e riabilitazione dello scienziato eretico, per poi, nei secoli successivi, saldarsi ai tanti miti di Galileo che scandirono la vita civile e culturale del nostro paese, giungendo, alla fine dell"800, alla costruzione di quel 'monumento' perenne della cultura italiana rappresentanto dalla pubblicazione dell'Edizione Nazionale curata da Antonio Favaro.
