Conventional research has credited the Shasu beduins with an urban lifestyle. However, this view is based on a single piece of evidence, a stele of Ramses II from Tell er-Rataba. As the corrrect interpretation is of considerable relevance for neighbouring disciplines of Egyptology, the present article proposes a reassessment of the pertinent text passage.
