Cysts of the potato root eelworm were treated in a number of ways. After a preliminary soaking, some were cut in half, some treated with trypsin, and some treated with trypsin and then cut in half. Emergence of larvae from lots of 25 of these cysts was then investigated. Emergence was highest from the halved cysts; but perhaps of greater interest was the fact that marked differences in variability were also found. The coefficients of variation for the halved cysts and the halved trypsin treated cysts were a fraction of those for the intact cysts. The results are discussed in relation to the conception of the cyst as a unit.
