Versuche zur Übertragung des bodengebundenen "fanleaf"-Virus der Weinrebe durch das Nadelälchen Xiphinema index zeigten, dass das Virus in dem Nematoden wenigstens 30 Tage hindurch persistent ist und durch einzelne Nematoden, Larven und erwachsene Tiere, übertragen werden kann. Die Übertragung kann innerhalb von 24 Stunden beendet sein, nachdem die Nematoden in die Wurzeln gesunder Pflanzen eingedrungen sind. Übertragung über das Ei auf die Nachkommenschaft der Nematoden wurde nicht beobachtet.
