Development of the oogonia was followed in Heterodera rostochiensis from the mitotic divisions at the distal end of the ovary to the appearance of the meiotic prophase chromosomes in the primary oocytes. Over this period, considerable increase in size occurred in the oogonia. At one stage during their passage down the ovary, aggregates of nuclei, which may have been 'nurse cells', were observed lying between the developing oogonia.
