Examination of the esophagi of various Pratylenchoides, Pratylenchus, and Radopholus species indicates the length of esophageal overlap on the intestine to be of minor importance as a differentiating character at the generic level. The diagnosis of Pratylenchoides is amended. Studies of the esophagi in type specimens of Pratylenchoides crenicauda, as well as in a population from Germany, show that the greatest length of the esophagus usually occurs dorsally but can occur laterally. Zygotylenchus Siddiqi, 1963 and Mesotylus de Guiran, 1964 are synonymized to Pratylenchoides Winslow, 1958 which now includes P. crenicauda Winslow, 1958, P. guevarai Tobar Jiménez, 1963 (syn: Zygotylenchus browni Siddiqi, 1963 and Mesotylus gallicus de Guiran, 1964) and P. taomasinae (de Guiran, 1964) n. comb.
