The enzymes amylase, cellulase, invertase, and pectinase were investigated by viscometric and spectrophotometric methods using homogenates of up to nine species, representing seven genera, of free-living, mycophagus and higher plant-parasitic nematodes. No amylase activity was demonstrated in homogenates of Meloidogyne arenaria arenaria, M. hapla, M. incognita acrita, Pratylenchus penetrans, and Radopholus similis, but it occurred in Aphelenchoides sacchari, Ditylenchus triformis and Panagrellus redivivus. Cellulase was present in all these nematodes except P. redivivus, and this enzyme was also demonstrated in homogenates of a species of Rhabditis. Invertase, while not found in D. triformis, was present in homogenates of A, sacchari, M, arenaria arenaria, and R. similis. In addition, a small amount of invertase activity was detected in homogenates of P. penetrans and P. redivivus. No pectinase activity was found in M. incognita acrita, A. sacchari, D. triformis, and P. redivivus but it occurred in homogenates of M. arenaria arenaria, M. hapla, and R. similis.
