Experiments with both V+ and V- Xiphinema index under different environmental osmotic pressures indicated that both groups can adapt to hypotonic and hypertonic environments and that V+ nematodes have an increased internal osmotic pressure. Morphological observations and histochemical tests demonstrated additional differences between the V+ and V- X. index. These observations are discussed in relation to their possible connection with osmoregulation and the localization of the virus.
