Laboratory studies of temperature as a factor influencing development of Heterodera avenae confirmed observations of previous workers that the cysts of this nematode require a period of low temperature before appreciable hatch will occur. The conditions for this pre-incubation low-temperature exposure requirement were determined and established to be within the range 0° C to 7° C for a minimum period of 8 weeks. Below-freezing temperatures were found to be injurious. Temperature requirements for emergence of larvae during subsequent incubation were found to be as follows: minimum about 2° C; optimum within the range 10° to 15° C; maximum between 25° and 30° C.
