Development of Heterodera schachtii on excised Beta vulgaris roots was influenced by several environmental and nutritional factors. Sex-ratio was not influenced by these same factors. Optimum temperature for rate of development was 25°C. Increased concentration of macronutrient salts, vitamins and sucrose in the medium increased the rate of development. Adult female body size increased with an increase in sucrose concentration but not with macronutrient salts and vitamins. Evidence indicates a differential ability of the sexes to develop to maturity.
