The non-ionic surfactant agral reduces the rate of hatch of eggs of M. javanica in vitro and in sand at various suctions. Greater inhibition of hatch occurs with eggs within egg sacs than with free eggs. The cationic surfactant vantoc is toxic to nematodes in vitro but in soil has no greater influence than the non-toxic agral in reducing infection. Agral also reduces the rate of reproduction of M. javanica on tomatoes in pots but is less effective than nemagon. On the other hand agral has a lower phytotoxicity than nemagon. Agral does not appear to work synergistically with nemagon when infested soil is treated with a mixture of these two compounds. It is concluded that surfactants should be tested further in field trials to determine whether they can regulate nematode numbers.
