Populations of the free-living, ovoviviparous, dioecious nematode Panagrellus redivivus axenically cultured frequently show demonstrable differences in 2 years or less after their isolation from one another. Many populations have shown differences in less than one year. This is illustrated with an unusual genetic variant which arose in one of a number of populations maintained on thin film continuous culture. The variant was detected by the death of most of the nematodes harvested from the thin film culture when the nematodes were held for 24 hours in their harvested medium as deep cultures in test tubes. Other differences noted in the new strain compared to an original strain included much greater fertility but lower viability, greater ammonia production per individual and higher pH of used medium. A hybrid population resulting from the cross between the two strains was investigated and potence as a measure of the degree of additivity and dominance deviation integrated over all pertinent gene loci was determined for some of the traits. Other traits were shown to be overdominant in their expression.
