As larvae of M. javanica move within the egg the larval cuticle on the outside of the curve stretches, while on the inside of the curve it is compressed by an equal amount. The percent change in longitudinal dimensions is given by the expression 100a/2r where a is the width of the body and r is the radius of curvature of the bending wave. Changes in length of the order of 60% occur in the cuticle of larvae moving in eggs. Such changes occur by bending (not stretching or compression) of the curved annuli. It is suggested that the annuli are formed by the mechanical process of buckling of the outer cortical layers of the cuticle during its early formation under compressive strain during the cyclical bending of the body. A model nematode is described to support this hypothesis.
