The model is based upon an assumption that the sex of a larva is irreversibly determined by its nutrient status early in its feeding phase. This dependence involves a biochemical equilibrium of nutrient molecules with target sites in the larva. The model is economical in that only a single parameter is involved; the equations are simple, easy to apply to data, and give a good description of the data considered here. The model suggests useful approaches to further experimentation in this field.
