Pentland Dell potato plants infested with many potato cyst-nematodes had greater stomatal resistances and more negative water potentials than lightly infested plants and they started to senesce earlier. Irrigation had little effect on the water relations of nematode-infested plants but decreased water stress in young plants infested with many nematodes. Root weight estimations suggested that nematodes and other associated secondary pathogens caused progressive death of roots starting about 11 weeks after planting; leaf areas of plants infested with many nematodes declined before those of uninfested plants, probably because of water stress. The pathotype A resistant variety, Maris Piper, resisted water stress better than Pentland Dell and its root weight declined more slowly, especially when the roots were infested with Heterodera rostochiensis Woll. rather than H. pallida Stone.
