On a soil inherently poor in Mg the yields of potato cvs Pentland Crown and Record were decreased almost one third by 10 eggs/g soil of Heterodera rostochiensis Woll. Although additional NPK fertiliser increased overall yield, the proportion of yield lost due to nematodes was unaltered. Nematode infestation decreased the percentages of Mg in the dry matter of the leaves and there was a positive correlation between the percentages of Mg in the leaves in July and final tuber yields. Percentage of K in the leaves was unaffected by nematode infestation except in Record given smaller amounts of fertiliser; it was then decreased and the plant senesced early. H. rostocbiensis increased more in plots given more fertiliser and the cv Pentland Crown was a better host than Record.
