The efficiency of six extraction methods was tested for the recovery of females and cysts of the cereal cyst-nematode, Heterodera avenae, from a range of soils. Methods that included elutriation were best. A fluidising column proved efficient in the extraction of cysts from wet or dry soil. The emergence of second-stage larvae from cysts into the soil over winter had no measurable effect on the accuracy of egg counts made in the following spring.
