Haulm size of potato plants measured 11 weeks after planting was decreased by Heterodera rostochiensis and H. pallida. The percentage dry matter of the haulm was increased, but as there was a corresponding decrease in the percentage ash in the dry matter, the total amount of plant mineral nutrients, expressed as a proportion of the fresh weight, was largely unchanged. On a dry matter basis, the concentrations of N, K, P and Mg were decreased when roots were invaded by nematodes but on a fresh weight basis only K and P concentrations were markedly decreased, and there were corresponding increases in the concentrations of Ca and Na. Fumigation increased the concentration of P in Pentland Dell, and delayed senscence of nematode infested plants.
